The Prize Winners

A couple of months ago, I was fortunate enough to be able to contribute the Grand Prize for a photo contest that was sponsored by Northwest Columbus Macaroni Kid (http://www.NWColumbus.MacaroniKid.com).  This blog has a great following in this area and needless to say, I was excited to be able to reach out to some local families while being able to give something at the same time.  The entire process was completely seamless and to say the least, it was a pleasure to be a part of it.  I was eagerly awaiting the end of the contest to see who’s photo received the most votes so that I could meet the family that I would be photographing.  Finally, the contest concluded and the votes were tallied.  Drumroll, please!  I received the email that would tell me who the winner was, but instead it informed me that there was a TIE for the grand prize!  Each family was able to choose what their prize would be, so there was a chance each family would choose something different and the problem would have worked itself out.  Low and behold, both families choose my prize.  In fact, one family said that they entered the contest JUST to potentially win my photo session.  How could I say no to that?  Needless to say, both families were awarded the grand prize and below you can see some of the photos from their sessions.

Capture The Moment, Don’t Create It

As a photographer, I see things pretty differently than those who don’t spend most of their time looking through a viewfinder.  I find myself looking at ordinary, everyday scenes while composing and gauging light, even though I’m not within 5 miles of my camera.  I enjoy creating images and shaping light.  And I have made many beautiful photos this way.  But there are times when creating images simply doesn’t work.  Take photographing kids for example.  They are unpredictable, unique and often just do their own thing.  That’s what makes them so darn fun to photograph.  And even beyond just kids, take me photographing my own kids for example.  Over the years, there have been countless photo sessions with my children.  Some were very successful and produced many wonderful photos of them.  But then there are the ones that weren’t so successful.  And I would venture to guess that 90% of the unsuccessful sessions were the ones where I was attempting to pose them.  I had an image in my head and I tried to create that image by instructing my kids to stay in certain spots or sit in a specific manner.  And as my level of frustration continued to rise because they were goofing off and being silly, I was missing tons of cool and memorable shots.  The fact is, Kids Don’t Pose.  Period.  But that’s okay.  Because let’s face it, the natural personality of kids isn’t going to shine through when they are asked to do something that they may not want to do.  And, in my opinion, the most important thing to capture when photographing kids is their personality.  It’s what makes them unique and special.  This isn’t to say that making that perfect smile, nice posture and looking right at the camera photo isn’t possible.  It’s to say that the manner in which that photograph is captured may not be the method of asking little Mary to sit up straight, give a big smile and look right into the camera, but rather a combination of good timing, proper positioning of yourself and simply being ready to release the shutter at the exact right time.  Many times a great portrait of a kid can come from a well composed candid photo.  (See Example 1)  And let’s face it, we all like to see these kinds of photos, but we also like to see the ones that are captured at the pinnacle of a moment because those are the ones that will carry someone’s personality forward to be looked back upon with a smile. (See Example 2)  Either way, since I have turned to this approach, my level of frustration has decreased while the quality of my photos has increased.  It’s a win win situation and lot more fun while also providing new challenges in photographic techniques that help ensure that your photo session produces the most favorable images that can be enjoyed for years.

Labor Day Fun

The air was cool and crisp and I was eager for a successful photo session.  This session was a reschedule, due to rain on its originally scheduled day and the forecast was still a bit sketchy, to say the least.  But this time, Mother Nature was on our side and we were able to fit in a super fun session!  We had nice weather, a nice location and the kids were ready to play.  In short, we had a ton of fun!  I think there were more sounds of laughing coming from this shoot than there were of camera shutter snaps.  Although, there were enough shutter sounds to capture these moments and many more.

Location, Location, Location

A few weeks ago, while making my hourly Facebook check in, I happened upon a message from a former classmate.  She asked if I could do a few photos for her website, to which I replied that I would be happy to work with her.  Being that she is someone who I know, I thought I would take the opportunity and try to find a new place to shoot.  I’ve been all over this town and I feel like I’ve been to every park, landmark and popular photo spot there is.  It was time for something new.  I asked a few other photographers and people who might offer some good suggestions, however the replies that I received were just what I didn’t need, parks, landmarks and popular photo spots.  It was time to get in the car and go for a drive.  I had a few places in mind, and luckily it was a nice day, so driving around wasn’t so bad.  I knew what the premise of the shoot would be as well as some idea about my subject’s personality.  So with that in mind, Katy (my 2 yr old daughter) and I set off.  We drove for a while, looking at a couple of locations that I had in mind, before heading downtown.  Katy and I chatted while driving which made for a good time, but let me say that looking for a good location for a photo shoot is a WAY different experience when your soundtrack is children’s music!  Nonetheless we found a perfect location for the shoot.

The location turned out to be great!  So, what is my point in all of this?  My point is that great locations don’t have to be parks or landmarks or popular photo spots.  In fact, sometimes those can be the worst places to shoot.  First of all, they are often crowded which can make for some challenging backgrounds.  Secondly, they’ve been shot a million times so they aren’t new and inventive in any way.  And lastly, if you pick a location just based on how pretty or visually appealing it is, chances are that you are taking away from your subject.  They are the focus, not the background or the location.  Often times, a great location that compliments your subject well, will be someplace that you drove by on your way to the park for your shoot.  If you are a photographer, keep your eyes open for that perfect location.  And if you are the one who will be in the photo, trust your photographer.  If they know the premise of the shoot along with a little personality info about the subjects, then they should be able to make a good decision about the location.
